Running iOS 14 with Widgetsmith Tech Tips • iPhone apps

The new widgets feature in iOS 14 is one of the most welcomed features by users.  A variety of third-party apps have added support for Widgets on the Home screen over the past few days, but the most important app now that differs from the rest is: Widgetsmith.

Widgetsmith comes from David Smith, the developer behind many of the popular Apple Watch and iPhone apps including sleep pedometer.  The concept of Widgetsmith is that it allows you to create custom widgets (widgets) for your home screen in iOS 14;  Here's how it works.

In the Widgetsmith app on your iPhone, there are three different UI widget sizes to choose from: Small, Medium and Large.  Each widget can display a variety of information and can be customized with different font styles and colors, element colors, and background colors.

The process is very straightforward and easy.  Simply click the "Add" button for the widget size you want to create, then click the widget to customize it.

The first decision you need to make is what kind of information you want the widget to display on your Home screen.  Below are the data sources available on Widgetsmith:

 Time

 History

Custom: Image, Photo in Album, Custom Text, Blank Box

 Calendar

 Reminders

 weather

 Health and activity

 Astronomy

Within each data type, there are a variety of different display options.  From there, you have additional customization options including font style, widget color, and background color.

Once you've designed the iOS 14 Home screen widget in the Widgetsmith app, you can return to your Home screen, long press to fully access Vibration Mode, and then tap the “+” icon in the upper-left corner.  Find Widgetsmith in the list of apps, then choose the size of the widget you created.

On your iOS 14 home screen, you can use as many widgetsmith widgets as you like.  Once you have added the Widgetsmith size to your home screen, long press, select “Edit Widget” and choose the “Widget” option to choose from the various designs that you have created in the Widgetsmith app.

Widgetsmith's popularity has sprung up and the app topped the App Store lists.  Widgetsmith customization options have proven to be very popular, and here is a video that went viral on TikTok with over 3 million likes explaining how to customize widgets via the Widgetsmith app.
